Diana Matheson ’08 celebrates her game-winning goal

The Olympics are now over, but one more Tiger managed to take home a medal: Diana Matheson ’08, who scored Canada’s only goal in the bronze medal women’s soccer match against France for a 1-0 shutout win.

That means Princeton had seven medalists, which, as @PrincetonBetch points out, beats the country that invented the Olympics.

We were slightly less successful in the other Olympics – ahem, Alumpics – taking silver behind Dartmouth (really? Dartmouth?!), with Cornell solidly in third. In case you missed it, this was the Ivy League photo-liking competition – the more people that “liked” a school’s photo on Facebook, the better that school does in the rankings. Dartmouth, Princeton and Columbia were the only schools to actually get any points, and Dartmouth’s overwhelming victory seems to suggest that perhaps no one else really cared, but if nothing else the photos will satisfy some of the summertime Orange Bubble withdrawal.

Week In Review: By the Numbers Edition (August 7-13)

If we were an iTunes single right now, we'd be "Moves Like Jagger."

Like a J-Lo summer pop single, Princeton has made a comeback, tying Harvard for #1 on the US News and World Report 2011-12 Ranking of the best undergraduate colleges in the United States.

After a year of being slighted by the Crimson menace, Princeton has returned to its former place on the leaderboard chart. One trivial beef I have: we always seem to inexplicably “tie” with Harvard and yet are listed after it– and don’t tell me it’s in alphabetical order.

I call shenanigans

I call shenanigans.

Changes from last year among the Ivies were sparse:

  • Dartmouth falls from #9 to #11
  • University of Pennsylvania is still tied in a pan-America five-way with CalTech, Stanford, MIT, and University of Chicago.
  • Columbia’s holding strong after a huge four-spot jump to #4 last year (mirroring their plummeting acceptance rates with the adoption of the Common App, or, as my theory goes, the result of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”. See also: Brown’s Emma Watson effect.)
  • Cornell: Still in Ithaca.

Other than that, rankings haven’t moved much. Methodology changes every year, and  people always debate the legitimacy of college rankings. Unfortunately, we can’t all be Sarah Lawrence.

We’re Back, Baby: Princeton ranked #1 National University

So we still have seven hours until US News & World Report releases its 2010 college rankings, a.k.a. the most important publication in the history of mankind. If you’re a total square (don’t worry, Huey Lewis says it’s hip), you can go to the website and stare at its gigantic countdown clock until midnight, when the American higher education system will shudder and have a collective orgasm.

The internet is a gossipy place, children, and it looks like the list has been leaked! Princeton has returned to the number one spot, after an entire year as number two behind Harvard. If the leaked list is accurate, Princeton has been ranked number one for nine of the past 10 years.

Apparently hats are not required for the number one school in the country

August is upon us! Ah, the Sunday of the summer months, freedom mixed with the creeping inevitability of the school year. Personally, we’re with Dave Plotz and his zany plan to rid the world of this month once and for all! But August or not, we’re still here at The Ink summer news desk, wading through the Sea of Media to bring you the finest Princeton news. In this week’s edition: Princeton locks down another 1/9th of the Supreme Court, West Point beats us in college rankings, Robbie George still doesn’t like gay marriage, Harvard tries to recoup some of its endowment via haberdashery, and WE GET MONEY FOR FUSION!!!

  • One more time, for the people way up in the nosebleed seats: SONIA SOTOMAYOR CONFIRMED! That’s right, Princeton’s getting another Supreme Court justice. We’re tired of this story, and you probably are, too. But just in case, wise Latina t-shirts.
  • It’s not all sunshine and rainbows on Nassau Street – Forbes bumped us down to number two on its “America’s Best Colleges” list. The usurper? West Point! Seriously? Seriously. Putting us number two seems to be something of a fad for major publications, with the Forbes bump following last year’s dethroning at the hands of US News and World Report. But we were kind of hoping Steve-O (commonly known as Malcolm “Steve” Forbes ’70) would keep the homerism going longer than just the one year, but as they say up in Montreal, c’est la vie!
