The “economic sense” of Princeton’s $30 million solar fields

Just south of Lake Carnegie, 27 acres of photovoltaic panels collect and convert enough solar energy to account for about 6% of Princeton University’s energy usage every year. As early as the summer of 2012, Princeton will be looking a little greener. The University plans to install a solar collector field that would generate 8 million kilowatt-hours per year – that’s enough to power 700 homes, or 5.5 percent of Princeton’s total energy use.
