Awkward and selective censorship

[NOTE TO READER: THIS POST MAKES FREQUENT USE OF EXPLETIVES.]

This shit was going to happen eventually. Add it to the list of national trends trickling on to this campus (see Occupy Wall Street). On January 17th, BodyHype unleashed its own spin on “Shit girls say,” a YouTube phenomenon where in dudes in drag make videos saying, well, shit girls would say. Most would agree that “Shit Princeton Kids Say!” – a slightly less gendered adaptation of the original – does a pretty good job, hitting all the major tenets of campus life. At the moment of this post, it’s closing in on 15,000 views.

Depending on how closely we look at it, it can tell us a lot about ourselves, namely that no matter what social boundaries divide Princeton students, at the end of the day we can all bond over our common future careers in finance. Have a look at the video and a thoughtful analysis after the jump.

3000Happy 2011, everyone!  Even though you all probably equate the weekend before the dreaded Day of the Dean with holing up in a library and crying your eyes out in sorrow, there are a slew of interesting arts events to tempt you this weekend. Crawl out of your paper-induced misery and give these a shot!

  • BodyHype’s 20th-Anniversary show is opening tonight at Theatre Intime–they’re pulling out all the stops for this concert, it’s not one to miss.  Thursday-Saturday at Theatre Intime: Thursday at 8pm, Friday at 10pm, Saturday at 7pm & 10pm.  Students $6, student events eligible.
  • The Lewis Center’s Atelier class, taught by a different visiting professor each semester, is presenting a final showcase of their music compositions from the term.  They call it “an evening of hilarious (and hair-raising) new songs and music theater scenes”–and the music I’ve overheard from their rehearsals in 185 has been beautiful.  Thursday and Friday at 7:30pm, Matthews Acting Studio at 185 Nassau Street. Free.

As we forge on through to Dean’s Date, I know we’re all looking for excuses to crawl out of our work-induced hibernation every now and then.  Take refuge in this week’s arts events: we’ve got a myriad of dance and music options from all over the artiness spectrum. There’s something for everyone–enjoy, and we’ll see you on the other side of Tuesday!

First up is Context Preconstructed, Sydney Schiff’s senior thesis piece with the Department of Dance.  A spread of photos from Sydney’s rehearsals was featured in this winter’s Nassau Literary Review; in it, she described the event as “simultaneously dance deconstructed and Judaism being deconstructed in dance.”  The piece combines the evolution of the Jewish identity with the evolution of dance: as Syndey, a History of Science major, explains, “the work reflects an intense period of self-reflection and personal exploration of both professional dance and Judaism that I pursued over the last four years.  This very much reflects how I, as an individual, was completely transformed by the Princeton community.”

Along with its sheer awesomeness factor, the costumer in me is totally digging the piece’s outfits, which were handmade by the Department of Theater’s costume department (with a little help from yours truly) and lean towards the American Apparel end of trendy.  ”We’re gonna go global after these tunics! Ubran Outfitters has nothing on us!,” joked Keating Helfrich, The Department’s Costume Assistant. While the monks’ costumes have been cut (don’t ask), this event definitely is not to be missed.

The show is in Lewis Center’s Patricia and Ward Hagan ‘48 Dance Studio. Thursday-Friday at 8pm; Saturday at 2 and 8pm. Free.
