TRUMAN SCHOLAR HALEY WHITE ’12 FIGHTS GLOBAL FOOD INSECURITY AND ROCKS OUT TO COLBERT’S COVER OF ‘FRIDAY’
Name: Haley White
Major: Woody Woo
Hometown: Chatham, NJ
Eating club/residential college affiliation: Charter/Wilson
What was your immediate response upon finding out you had won the Truman Scholarship?
I started to cry. Then, I called my mom, then my dad, then my stepmom, then my boyfriend, then some friends, then my brother. I think that my ex-stepfather was mixed in there too somewhere. I have a pretty complicated family tree. It’s like what the Brady Brunch’s would be if it took performance-enhancing drugs.
Who’s your favorite Princetonian, living or dead, real or fictional?
Sally Frank ’80. She sued the eating clubs so that they would admit women. I admire her because she had the courage to stand up for her values at the risk of being ostracized and she did not give up after she graduated. She kept on fighting for more than ten years. I hope that in my best moments I am at least half as ballsy as her.
What’s the best meal you’ve eaten at Princeton?
Anything at Teresa’s in Palmer Square.
In one sentence, what do you actually do all day?
Whatever is on my to-do list.
What is your greatest fear?
That I’ll screw up big time and have no one to blame but myself.
Ideally, around midnight.
What’s your personal anthem?
I go through phases. Last year, when I had to prepare for my “American Economic History” exam, I listened to Mika’s “We Are Golden” over-and-over again. Today, during my math problem set, I focused on Stephen Colbert’s cover of “Friday.” I listen to good music too, just not on repeat.
What’s your drink?
Michelada cubana — beer with lime, salt and hot sauce.
New Butler or Old Butler?
Can’t say. I never had the opportunity to visit Old Butler.
What was the last production you saw?
Something by PSAT (Princeton South Asian Theatrics).
Best place on campus?
Café Viv and Witherspoons- they sell Fair Trade bananas!
Worst place on campus?
Any of the windowless computer clusters that smell like feet.
What do you do to unwind?
I go on a jog, take a shower with lavender-scented body wash and then watch Netflix. Right now, I’m on an “Office” and “Ally McBeal” kick.
What’s hanging above your desk and/or bed?
A lot of random cards, posters and magazine clippings. I believe that dorm room walls are meant to be collaged (without damaging the paint job, of course, Housing).
Who’s your mortal enemy?
No idea. I’d like to know so that I can defend myself.
Do you know all the words to Old Nassau?
No. Does my mother? I think so. Has she ever walked around the house singing the chorus in her Reunions jacket? Yes.
Where do you do your best thinking?
What makes you laugh?
What makes you cry?
What makes someone a Princetonian?
A keen intellect combined with a love for garish, orange clothing.
In 25 years I will be…
Well, I just told the Truman Foundation that I would contribute to efforts to combat global food insecurity. I can see myself sitting in a field, educating under-resourced farmers about advances in agronomy, or working with entrepreneurs in-and-around malnourished communities to improve food supply chains. No matter what, I will need a job in which I can spend time outside and talk to people.
